Students

Μixed teams of professionals and students are very effective because, in a Balint team, professional experts can contribute with their own experiences in student learning. The Hellenic Balint Society supports the composition of such groups.

Students taking part in a Balint group at the Greek Balint Society, have the opportunity to recognize part of their work for the training in “Balint group leading” if they want to follow it in a later time.

Τhe criteria for Students for participation in Balint-group are,  that most of the studies have been completed and that students have completed or are currently doing the internship.

The importance of Balint Groups to Students

As a student at the beginning of your career, but at the latest with your practice, you have experienced some contacts with patients or clients. Especially when you work or practice in a clinic, or any other institution, you are faced with the principle of your work activity and many requirements such as the internalization of practical procedures, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, solutions to problems, etc.

It is not much time to deal extensively with the patient or client (depending on the job), the concerns and the problems. So, some of these contacts may soon be forgotten, some may work primarily as a reminder of specific concerns, but there are always contacts with people who remain in memory. Sometimes we are even troubled and often want to exchange information and opinion with someone. These incidents may involve a moribund (or relatives), or a “difficult / tiring” patient or client. There are endless reasons why we are moved by a specific contact, why we feel more than usual emotionally, or perhaps insecure, without an understandable reason. Students’ studies and practical work often do not offer enough room to deal with such contacts. The patient, the client, the user of social services, etc., is treated exclusively as an “incident” without the necessary space for the analysis of “RELATION” and its psychodynamics.

It is precisely this void in education that complements work in greek Balint groups of the Hellenic Balint Society. It offers the opportunity to engage more intensely in the contact/relation between the professional and the patient/client, to develop an understanding of the events, as well as new ways of dealing with difficulties of any kind.
